5 bowel cancer symptoms you need to know

The earlier bowel cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. Here are five symptoms you need to know:

  1. Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your stool — that can’t be explained by haemorrhoids.
  2. A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habits — you may be having more frequent bowel movements with loose stool.
  3. Unexplained weight loss — you haven’t been eating any less or exercising more.
  4. Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason.
  5. A pain (particularly if brought on by eating) or lump in your tummy
It is important to note that many people have these symptoms and do not have bowel cancer.

When to see a doctor

The signs of bowel cancer may be subtle. You might not feel ill. Try treatments for your symptoms in the first instance. If they don’t get better or you’ve had symptoms for three weeks or more, see a doctor.
