Endoscopic resection (ER) and HALO radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
Endoscopic resection (ER) is a procedure involving an endoscope (narrow flexible tube) being passed down the oesophagus (food pipe). After an initial inspection the instrument is adapted and used to remove tissue from the oesophagus.
The technique is a common treatment for early cancer or high-grade dysplasia (abnormal cells) caused by Barrett’s oesophagus or early gastric cancer.
HALO radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is non-surgical technology using an endoscope to emit radio waves to target and remove dysplasia caused by Barrett’s oesophagus. It may also be used as an additional treatment after ER.
