Video fluoroscopy
A video fluoroscopy is similar to a barium swallow test in that it also uses X-ray technology to record a patient as they swallow a solution of barium sulphate, a white metallic compound that shows up in a special type of X-ray (called fluoroscopy).
However, with video fluoroscopy the X-ray images are converted into moving video in real time. This enables us to see in much more detail how you are swallowing and why you may be having difficulty in doing so.
You may be asked to change position during the test or swallow a few different kinds of food in addition to the barium. This is so we can understand if certain quantities or consistencies of food or drink are more difficult for you to swallow, or if your problem may be helped by adjusting the position of your head or body.
Video fluoroscopy will also help to show if food or drink are going into your airway or ‘going down the wrong way.’ When this problem happens without you knowing it, this is called silent aspiration.
The test usually takes no more than half an hour to complete. The barium solution has a thick, chalky consistency and is non-toxic, though it can sometimes lead to constipation when it goes through your digestive system during the following 24 hours.
