Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is a chronic condition affecting the gullet (food pipe or oesophagus). It is like asthma of the oesophagus. It is increasingly being recognised in adults and children with problems getting the food down, swallowing, or food getting stuck.

The condition was first described in the early 1990s. In the last decade, there have been significant advances in testing and treatments for EoE with new scientific breakthroughs and medications now approved for use by doctors.

Dr Sami of Digestive Health UK was part of a group of experts who wrote the UK guidelines on detecting and treating this condition.

The purpose of these guidelines was to provide a practical and evidence-based guide to other gastroenterologists and specialists to help them look after patients with EoE, but also to raise awareness around this condition as it is often missed until the later stages of the disease.
