24-hour pH impedance test
24-hour pH and impedance monitoring is a test to measure the amount of fluid rising (or refluxing) into the food pipe (oesophagus) from the stomach over 24-hours. The pH part of the test is to check if this fluid is acidic or not, enabling us to work out if your symptoms are due to acid reflux in conditions such as Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
The test uses a small probe attached to a fine tube (catheter), which is passed into a nostril, down the oesophagus and into the stomach. The position of the probe is checked and held in place with adhesive tape on the side of your face. You are asked not to eat or drink for a few hours before the test period begins.
The other end of the tube goes under your clothing and is attached to a recording device, which is small enough to carry with a shoulder strap or on a belt. You will need to return to the clinic the following day to have the catheter removed. The measurements are later analysed so we can make a diagnosis.
