What are the symptoms of eosinophilic oesophagitis?
Eosinophilic oesophagitis, also known as oesophageal asthma, is a rare disorder that causes chronic inflammation of the tissue in the food pipe (oesophagus). EoE affects 1 in 3000 people in the UK.
Symptoms include:
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Food getting stuck in the throat (impaction)
- Chest pain
- Vomiting
- Poor growth (in children)
- Weight loss
Diagnosis
Tests to diagnose EoE include:
- Endoscopy
- Biopsy (tissue samples)
- Barium swallow
Treatments
The following can help you manage EoE:
- Food elimination diets
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) medications
- Topical swallowed steroids (Budesonide) such as Jorveza
